Information about the Washington Monument



The Washington monument is 555 feet and 5 1/8 inches tall,and weighs 100,000 tons.While under construction in 1854 the Washington National Monument Society ran out of money after completing only one/third of the monument.When the government took over and  finished the last two/thirds of the monument in 1884 they used marble from a different quarry causing the bottom one/third to differ in color from the top two/thirds

The Washington Monument is open every day of the year with the exception's of July 4 and December 25.
Summer Hours: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. (May 31 - September 6,) with the final tour beginning before 9:45 p.m.

Rest of Year: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. with the final  tour beginning before 4:45 p.m.

If you would like to purchase/reserve tickets, you can do so by calling 1.877.444.6777 for individual tickets or 1.877.559.6777 for group reservations. There is a $1.50 service charge per ticket. These tickets may be picked up at the “will call” window of the Washington Monument Lodge on the day of your tour.Please note that tickets are reserved months in advance during the summer months.

The Washington monument is a tribute to George Washington,the first president of the United States of America.In 1783, Congress proposed the idea of tributing a monument to George Washington.On July the Fourth,1848, a ceremony was held for the laying of the cornerstone.The monument's construction was finished in 1884,and was dedicated to George Washington February 21,1885.And on October 9,1888,the monument opened to the public.
